Fire Department

Heath’s Fire Department has been serving the community and Licking County since 1951. The combination department protects Heath’s 12.5 square miles with a staff of 16 full-time firefighter/medics, including Chief Mark Huggins, and 24 volunteer firefighter/EMTs with various certifications. The department also provides fire protection services to a portion of Franklin Township in Licking County. In addition, the department operates under the county’s Mutual Aid Agreement, providing assistance to all other fire departments in Licking County. The department has also incorporated Automatic Response with surrounding departments.

The Heath Fire Department operates a three-platoon system working 24 hours on and 48 hours off. Each shift is assigned a captain, lieutenant, and three firefighter/medics. Heath Fire/EMS responds annually to about 2,000+ calls for service. Always striving for improvement, Heath currently has an (insurance) ISO rating of 5.

In addition to fire and EMS services, departmental activities also include fire inspections, fire prevention, industrial and commercial fire safety training, a junior fire-setter program, and community CPR training.

Heath’s two fire stations house two structural engines, a rescue pumper, three medium-duty ALS medic units, a 100’ SkyArm aerial platform, a 4X4 utility truck, a Walter airport crash/foam truck, prevention car, and a command vehicle. Heath also houses Licking County’s HazMat Truck #2, a Water Rescue Trailer, and a specialized Class B Foam Trailer with concentrate and application equipment.

Two permanent property tax levies compliment the department’s income tax based funding. In addition, the Heath Fire Department implemented an EMS Billing Program in October 2006 wherein program revenues are returned to the City’s General Fund.
